Cherie & Simon’s Wedding

Cherie & Simon’s Wedding:

Wedding Flowers and Decor at Cape Point Vineyards

We recently did the wedding flowers and decor at Cape Point Vineyards for Cherie and Simon. I was introduced to Cherie and Simon through a friend and colleague, Katharine Price, who was coordinating their wedding day, and hosting them at the beautiful Maesteg Guest House which neighbours the Vineyard and overlooks the breathtaking Noordhoek Valley.

I met Cherie and Simon over a Skype chat and was instantly engaged with this fun-loving, bubbly bride and her chivalrous groom.

Working with these two was the greatest pleasure, as we all pinned away furiously on Cherie’s wedding Pinterest board, gathering ideas and images, most with lots of sparkle, and sharing the feel for the overall style and vision for the flowers and décor for their special day.

Cherie and Simon provided their guests with lawn games to keep them entertained on the terrace during the couple photos. This included giant Jenga, Croquet, Boule and Noughts and Crosses that they enjoyed during pre-drinks, all adding to the fun that this couple is all about.

From the start Cherie told me of her love for all things shiny and how this ‘magpie’ trait had earned her a reputation with her family, who lovingly teased her about this. It was very important to her, and to us, for this to be incorporated into the décor. We did this by using lots of twinkly fairy lights, silver sequinned table runners, mirror trays to reflect the gentle candlelight and the bright and beautiful floral rose bowls.

The couple have travelled extensively together, so they incorporated this into their day by naming the tables after the different destinations they have travelled to together and remembering the richness of their life experiences that brought them to this special day.

We sprinkled table crystals and scattered mercury tea lights for a gorgeous glow on the tables and added turquoise, glittered butterflies, supplied to us by the bride, to add an extra ‘pop’ of colour to their table flowers.

With the freshness of the venue and the white cloths off-setting the exuberance of colour, light and sparkle, the end product was magical.

Dirk and Jen’s Wedding

Dirk and Jen’s Wedding:

On a beautiful May day last autumn, we had the joy of planning and co-ordinating the wedding of a very special couple, Dirk and Jen – we just loved every bit of this wedding!

Dirk and Jen had seen our ‘Citrus and Slate’ styled shoot featured on The Pretty Blog a few months earlier and loved the combination of the neutrals, yellows and greys. They were also keen on using some local flowers in the mix for their big day, hence the incorporation of some white proteas and soft, grey fynbos. While the feel I got from them at our first meeting was that they had a preference of classic over modern, I also wanted to provide them with a contemporary feel, suited to the young couple they are – they were game. We put together a mix of both soft flowers – the roses, lisianthus, delphiniums and fynbos – and structured flowers – the proteas, tulips, and casablanca lilies – and opted for grouped arrangements for the larger focals, while adding a fun touch to the more classic table arrangements, with quirky craspedia balls and tulips dotted throughout.

Jen was wonderful to work with – gentle and gracious, uncomplicated while also knowing her likes and dislikes, trusting, and overall, such a lady – a real compliment to her adoring Dirk. I really wanted her bouquet to reflect her softness, stearing away from the bold yellow used throughout the rest of the wedding and opting for a romantic posie in neutrals, with a touch of silver brunia for depth and texture. Jen was breathtaking in her customised Stella York gown supplied by Olivelli Cape Town.

The bridesmaids bouquets on the other hand incorporated punches of fun yellow in the craspedia balls and tulips, while still maintaining a classic and elegant feel. The bridesmaids were graceful in beautiful, rouched buttercup gowns, also from Olivelli, which were the perfect gentle statement to accompany Jen in her soft, scalloped lace creation.

Dirk is a gentleman in every sense of the word. His love and admiration of his beautiful bride was evident from the first time we met and we were so priviledged to be a part of the journey of seeing this lovely couple give their lives to each other. He and his groomsmen were dapper in navy suits and bow ties. I loved how old-school so many of the details of this wedding were, somewhat reminiscent of ‘Downton Abbey’ splendour and what a fitting venue for such an occasion – the resplendent Lanzerac Estate, steeped in history and old-world charm. The cut-glass tumblers, the library, the chivalry – this wedding was a joy to behold.

Dirk and Jen really wanted their ceremony to be outdoors, surrounded by the beauty that is the surrounding valley. They loved the idea of the focal arch with ‘floating’ flowers and hanging glass vases. The striking setup provided the perfect platform for our floral additions of simple floral posies, grouped focals and silver urns full of yellow and white petals.

I just love this pic of Dirk and Jen, shortly after saying their ‘I do’s’, with a halo of golden light and the joy of their guests surrounding them. This was such a special moment as they were presented for the first time as husband and wife to their loved ones.

More than anything I loved being a part of all the details of this special day – assisting Dirk and Jen with the aesthetic decisions that needed to be made from the flowers and decor to layout and lighting, guiding them through the how’s, when’s and where’s, the on-the-day coordination, contingency plans for rain (and just look at the weather!), managing the suppliers, keeping everything running smoothly and according to the time schedule and generally ensuring that they had the most memorable day of their lives! It helped that they were such a pleasure to work with and had great style.

We decided on a banquet look and feel, opting for 6 long tables with Dirk and Jen seated in the centre, surrounded by their friends and family. They opted for the lovely wide plinth tables and ghost chivaris chairs from Urban Tonic, giving us lots of space for the table decor and spacious settings for the guests . The block table runners in a bold chevron yellow were right on trend, fresh on the latest catalogue, and added a fun element to the elegant reception decor. Jen loved the idea of having garlands of tulips hanging in between the fairy light curtains and the effect was stunning. We made use of Lanzerac’s dance floor and set up a chic satelite bar to the one side for the dancers to stay hydrated, ensuring the party went on into the wee hours. A service bar in the foyer of the venue, and champagne coolers positioned strategically between the tables, ensured that guests remained in the venue making for a lovely, vibrant atmosphere which Dirk and Jen were very specific about.

We have been incredibly blessed with easy going brides who choose us mostly for their love of our style and allow us the freedom to create something beautiful for them on the day. Dirk and Jen were incredibly generous with their trust of us and our ability to look after their dreams and make this into a day they will cherish for the rest of their lives. This made their wedding a really special one for us as we were allowed to own the design concepts and use our creative flair to piece together a carefully coordinated union.

We were very fortunate to have worked with some incredibly talented people on this wedding. Lanzerac Estate, who we have since done a feature blog post on, was the perfect setting for this fine day and our experience with Denise and the rest of the Lanzerac staff was proffesional, thorough and friendly. Dirk and Jen chose Peter Gilder for their rings and jewellery, Olivelli Cape Town for their gowns and Khaliques Sandton for their suits. Their stationery was perfection by Lezanne from Lezanne’s Designs and their 3 tiered, triple flavoured, masterpiece of a wedding cake was made by none other than Lulubelle’s Bakes.

To say that this wedding stands out as one of my favourites would be an understatement. I loved every moment working on this wedding and can only thank the very humble bride and groom for allowing us the opportunity to put together their special day. Dirk and Jen – wishing you many, many years of wedded bliss… you’ve had the perfect start xx

Romantic Urns: Wedding Inspiration

With the wedding season upon us, we are loving dreaming and planning gorgeous looks for our brides. One of our all-time favourites is capturing the essence of nature in a full, lush, overflowing urn. Whether it is a classic cream ceramic, or grey cement, or vintage silver, or shimmering rose gold, we absolutely adore filling these romantic vessels with trailing leaves, and opulent blooms. A sensory heaven!

Here are a few of our favourite inspiration pieces for this season. Pastel, soft tones, with fragrant blossoms, tumbling out of footed urns, with a slightly wild feel, and an a-symmetrical balance. Oh our happy hearts!

Melanie & Paul’s Wedding Flowers

Melanie & Paul’s Wedding Flowers:

Earlier this year, we had the joy of doing wedding flowers for the ethereal Mel, and her groom Paul. With a dream for all things delicate, soft and whimsical and a colour palette to match – this was just a pleasure to create!

Paul and Mel met through a mutual friend…

“We were drawn to each other straight away and after one date and a little yellow post-it note in my post box, I knew I wanted to marry him. 6 years on, we have already shared so many beautiful memories – including becoming first time parents to our precious little girl & most recently our wedding day which was a very small & intimate celebration of our love & our little family.”

The wedding was hosted at Goedgedacht in Riebeek Kasteel. It was a perfect, blue-sky day, the warmth of the weather mirrored in the smiling faces of family and friends who came together to celebrate this charming couple.

The Rose Cafe_Wedding Flowers_Mel and Paul_002

“In planning this special day it was important to us to stay true to who we are & not get caught up in the traditional extravagance that can accompany a wedding. We limited our guest list very tightly to immediate family & very close friends – all the people who have loved and supported us in our journey together so far. We wanted to use the opportunity to make them feel special too so we decided on a weekend away.

We came across the venue by mistake while visiting Riebeek Kasteel for a weekend… We fell in love with Goedgedacht immediately… A beautiful olive farm that had everything we needed in one place, including a spectacular view of table mountain but mainly – they do so much good. They are a non-profit organization that run a development programme for underprivileged children in their community. They also take the time to offer their olive groves as a memorial where visitors can dedicate trees to loved ones they have lost. We couldn’t wait to tell our families we had found the perfect venue and in doing so found that both knew the venue well – Paul’s mom had spent time there with friends and my uncle had actually dedicated a tree to my aunt & godmother who we lost to cancer a few years ago – this solidified our choice and we knew we had chosen the right place.”

Melanie’s bridal bouquet was a trailing delight of pastel blooms. Inspired by the silk flower garlands which accompanied Reem Acra’s gorgeous gowns down the runway at last year’s Bridal Fashion Week, Mels’ garland was a mix of all buds soft and pretty, and was the perfect accessory to her incredibly beautiful Vintage-style gown.

The Rose Cafe_Wedding Flowers_Mel and Paul_001

“I work in the fashion industry and have a background in design. I have dabbled in photography and am always furiously collecting pretty images and  making pretty things so it was natural that our wedding ended up having a very personal DIY touch to it.

In deciding on a theme & color palette for the day, I knew I wanted to play with the concept of “bloom” – I felt I could tie together all the pretty romantic things that I love in a way that was symbolic of our relationship & family which we had allowed to just blossom & grow without much planning or foresight. I decided to keep a fresh palette of pinks with highlights of mixed metals, mainly inspired by romantic and ethereal florals & antiques. The flowers were key to achieving this and The Rose Cafe did such a fantastic job! It made me so happy to send our guests home with beautiful bunches of flowers on the Sunday morning – the perfect end to a perfect weekend.”

The blossoming theme and the romantic antique pink colour palette were carried through from the delicate blooms in the bride’s hair, to the hanging garlands over the windows, decorating scenic views beyond.

The Rose Cafe_Wedding Flowers_Mel and Paul_003 The Rose Cafe_Wedding Flowers_Mel and Paul_004

The tables were embellished with an abundance of dahlias, garden roses, prince of wales and lisianthus, amongst other things, held in a mixture of rose gold mercury urns, brass and gold bud vases and bowls, all reflecting the twinkling fairy light canopy above.

The Rose Cafe_Wedding Flowers_Mel and Paul_005

Melanie and Paul’s little cherub Georgia Rose was an absolute delight in her dainty lace dress, and her Baby’s Breath head garland!

The Rose Cafe_Wedding Flowers_Mel and Paul_006

The Bridesmaids all wore soft grey-green Eucalyptus garlands, with the Maid of Honour wearing a floral side garland in an array of pinks created using garden roses and tiny carnation and chrysanthemum buds, all the layers of frilly petals adding to the prettiness.

The Rose Cafe_Wedding Flowers_Mel and Paul_007

Doing weddings is a passion of mine and I love being a part of the joyous celebration of two special people coming together but what makes it even more memorable is when it’s someone that I know. It was such a delight contributing to this beautiful day. Mel’s softly spoken manner and gentle nature are such appealing qualities and we loved working together with her and Paul to put this dream of theirs together.

It was also such a pleasure to work with the amazing photographers, Rebecca & Bruce – from Love Made Visible again.

We love making someone’s dream wedding come true, and it fills our hearts to overflowing when we receive notes of happiness from our lovely Brides!

Here is what Melanie had to say:

“Thank you so much! The flowers were absolutely beautiful!! I couldn’t have asked for a better florist – you are like an artist! We had the most magical day. Lots of love and thank yous! The Bez’s xx”

Oh happy heart!
